PSPD’s position on the passage of the impeachment motion against Yoon Seok-yeol

It is a victory of the people who are defending democracy. Today (December 14), the National Assembly passed the impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol with the 204 votes out of 300 members of the National Assembly. The vote by the National Assembly is a natural result that responds to the public’s demand that the presidency of Yoon Seok-yeol, a traitor, cannot be tolerated for even one more day.

The shock and anger of the citizens over the civil disorder and insurrection that Yoon Seok-yeol committed to suspend the functions of the National Assembly and the National Election Commission, which are constitutional bodies, cannot be expressed in words. Today’s passage of the impeachment motion is the result of the people’s firm determination to not recognize as the head of state someone who has thrown away the democracy and constitutional order that they have worked so hard to achieve for the sake of their own power and security.

The National Assembly’s passage of the impeachment motion is just the beginning of the trial against Yoon Seok-yeol and the participants in the rebellion. The Constitutional Court should conclude the hearing as soon as possible and respond to the people’s demand to dismiss Yoon Seok-yeol. The National Assembly and investigative agencies must thoroughly investigate the facts of the insurrection and the criminal acts of Yoon Seok-yeol and the insurrectionists. In particular, Yoon Seok-yeol should be detained and investigated for his role as the ringleader of the insurrection, considering the seriousness of the crime and the possibility of him destroying evidence.

During the vote, we clearly saw who the political forces were that blocked the impeachment and acted as a shield for the forces of rebellion. The People Power Party, which has put its own political interests first, is the group that has caused the tragedy of modern South Korean history, which has seen two impeachments of the president, first of Park Geun-hye and then of Yoon Seok-yeol. The People Power Party should be disbanded for its responsibility as the ruling party of the impeached administration and for its responsibility for inciting an insurrection.
