[Joint Statement] Israel must immediately cease the attacks on Iran

The United States must immediately stop providing Israel with military support and cease any attempts at military intervention
All relevant countries must immediately cease all military actions and seek to resume negotiations

20 June 2025

Since Israel’s pre-emptive strike against Iran on 13 June, the armed conflict has escalated beyond control. As of now, at least 600 people have been killed in Iran, with over 1,300 injured. In Israel, at least 24 people have been killed, and hundreds injured. Yesterday (19 June), Israel bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities, and Iran responded by bombing Israel’s major hospital, further aggravating the situation. According to the media, US President Trump has approved plans to attack Iran, with only the final order remaining. The world is on the brink of expansion of war, caught in anxiety.

Israel’s pre-emptive strike has provoked revenge attacks from Iran, seriously endangering the lives and safety of citizens in both countries. Israel’s attack has worsened the prospects of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and increased the risk of radioactive contamination from the bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities and reactors. Indiscriminate bombing could lead to horrific consequences. We urgently call for an immediate halt to all military action.

Until Israel’s pre-emptive strike, no international organization or US intelligence agency had publicly concluded that Iran was developing nuclear weapons. Currently, Israel is the only country in the Middle East that possesses nuclear weapons, with an estimated arsenal of around 90 warheads Israel’s pre-emptive strike against Iran under the guise of “removing the nuclear threat” is not only illegitimate, but it will also fail to prevent nuclear proliferation in the long term. Instead, it will increase reliance on nuclear deterrence and exacerbate the nuclear arms race. This must stop immediately.

The United States, which was a party to the nuclear negotiations with Iran, condoned Israel’s pre-emptive strike while the negotiations were ongoing, and has since provided military support for Israel’s attacks. President Trump is demanding Iran’s “unconditional surrender” and has even mentioned direct military intervention, encouraging escalation. The United States must immediately cease all attempts at military intervention and work to resume negotiations. We once again emphasize that all of this disaster began with President Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement (JCPOA) in 2018. We urge the United States not to make the unforgivable choice again, blocking the possibility of a diplomatic solution and putting the world in danger.

Meanwhile, on 17 June, the G7 leaders issued a joint statement recognizing Israel’s attacks as “a right to defend itself ” and expressing their “support for Israel’s security” in one voice. We strongly condemn this statement, which disregards the UN Charter and international law, tolerates Israel’s military actions that violate sovereignty and use force, and excuses Israel of responsibility. Israel has already killed over 50,000 Palestinians, and people are still dying in the Gaza Strip at this very moment. Moreover, this attack cannot be justified as Israel’s “right to defend itself ” under any circumstances. Stop disrupting the international order that humanity has worked so hard to establish. Stop threatening peace and security around the world.

If the world is ruled by the logic of force and military solutions prevail, it will lead to war. Historically, neither democracy nor peace have been achieved through war. At this crossroads of escalation, we who desire peace demand the following.

  • Israel must immediately cease its attacks on Iran!
  • The United States must immediately stop providing Israel with military support and cease any attempts at military intervention!
  • All relevant countries must immediately cease all military actions and seek to resume negotiations!
  • All governments must make every diplomatic effort to stop the war and achieve a peaceful resolution!
