11 April 2026(Sat), The ‘Flea Market of Remembrance’ is an event organized by People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy(PSPD) to mark the 12th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Tragedy, bringing people together to remember the tragedy and reaffirm our commitment to a safe society.

The event will feature various booths, including a sharing booth selling items donated by members and activists of PSPD, a memorial experience booth for creating yellow ribbons symbolizing the remembrance of the Sewol Ferry Tragedy, and a booth selling Sewol related merchandise. The proceeds from these activities are intended to support efforts for truth-seeking and the establishment of a safer society.

The Sewol Ferry Tragedy, which occurred on April 16 2014, was a major tragedy in the Republic of Korea. The ferry, which was en route from Incheon to Jeju, sank, resulting in the loss of 304 lives out of 476 passengers. Among those on board were 325 second-year students from Danwon High School, who were on a field trip to Jeju, leading to significant casualties among the youth. At the time, the government failed to accurately assess the scale of the disaster and was criticized for its inadequate rescue efforts.

Since then, other major disasters have occurred, including the Itaewon Tragedy on October 29, which claimed 159 lives, and the Muan Airport Tragedy involving a Jeju Air flight, resulting in 179 fatalities. All these tragedies were preventable and classified as human errors. Despite the passage of 12 years since the Sewol Ferry Tragedy, a truly safe society has yet to be achieved. The families of the Sewol Ferry victims and people continue to advocate for truth and safety, emphasizing the need for accountability and systemic change to prevent future tragedies.
