Letter to the US President Donald Trump to Call for Taking Action to End the Korean War and Establish Peace on the Korean Peninsula
Feb 21, 2025
Dear President Trump,
We extend our warmest greetings to you as you begin your term as the 47th President of the United States. Congratulations on your inauguration.
The Korea Peace Action is an international campaign dedicated to resolving the ongoing crisis and fostering peace on the Korean Peninsula. This initiative is supported by 603 civil society organizations in the Republic of Korea(ROK), along with 80 international partner organizations.
We recognize and appreciate your past efforts to advance the prospects for peace on the Korean Peninsula, particularly through the historic US-DPRK summit in Singapore in 2018. Furthermore, we welcome your recent statement in January 2025, in which you expressed your willingness to resume dialogue with Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK), a process that had been suspended upon your assumption of office. We sincerely hope that you build upon the progress made during your first administration and once again work toward improving U.S-DPRK relations and establishing lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In recent years, as dialogue and negotiations have stalled, tensions between the ROK and the DPRK have escalated. Both sides have designated each other as adversaries, and the September 19 Comprehensive Military Agreement, which once served as a safety pin against armed conflict in the border area, has been rendered ineffective. As a result, the risk of war on the Korean Peninsula has increased, and even the minimal communication channels necessary to prevent accidental clashes have been severed. In this critical moment, we urgently need the wisdom and cooperation of all relevant parties to de-escalate tensions and restore the path to peace.
Therefore, we respectfully urge you, President Trump, to actively engage in efforts to build peace on the Korean Peninsula and to consider the following requests :
First, we hope that your administration will take decisive steps to formally end the Korean War, which has persisted for 72 years. Although the 1953 Armistice Agreement included a commitment to convene a political conference within three months to seek a peaceful solution, this promise remains unfulfilled. Over the course of this prolonged ceasefire, the constant threat of war has become an enduring reality. A vicious cycle of hostility and distrust has fueled an arms race and military demonstrations, leading to further military threats and insecurity. The nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula is a direct consequence of this vicious cycle. We urge you to take bold action to bring an end to the world’s longest-standing war and to open the door to a future of peace.
Second, we hope that you will take meaningful steps to establish a new U.S.-DPRK relationship and build a permanent and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, as agreed upon at the Singapore Summit. Resolving decades of hostility and fostering constructive relations will provide the foundation for a new era of peace and prosperity not only on the Korean Peninsula but throughout Northeast Asia. We encourage your administration to resume U.S.-DPRK dialogue, drawing on past experiences, and to advance negotiations that will lead to substantial progress in establishing a permanent peace regime and denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, we urge you to support the resumption of inter-Korean dialogue.
Third, we hope that your administration will prioritize a peace-first approach over sanctions and pressure. Attempts to force the other party into submission have historically led to heightened mistrust and worsened the situation. A more realistic and fundamental approach is needed to break the decades-long cycle of hostility and mutual threats. We call upon your administration to move beyond past policies of pressure and instead adopt a peace-first approach – one that prioritizes sustained dialogue and negotiations with the DPRK to reduce the nuclear risk and pave the way for lasting peace.
Fourth, we urge your administration to play a leading role in advancing a world free of nuclear weapons. We welcome your commitment to nuclear disarmament talks with Russia and China, as expressed at the Davos Forum in January. Given the growing global threat of nuclear war amid rising arms races, it is imperative that it is essential to reduce existing nuclear weapons. We believe that the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula can only be successfully achieved when it is linked to broader international efforts toward a world without nuclear weapons.
We sincerely hope that the U.S.-DPRK negotiations will resume as soon as possible, setting the stage for an end to the Korean War and establishment of lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. We ask that you listen to the urgent voices of the Korean people and take hold steps to move forward on the path to peace.
Sincerely,
